Workplace by Facebook is now pretty much our company's main way of broadcast communication (outside of email, which is still used especially for very important or time-sensitive info) and for different types of "themed" groups to share updates and info with one another. We have Workplace groups at the all-company level, for various sites, for various areas of work (both by department areas, such as HR, which has groups at both the country and global level, and by interests, such as for our DEI groups), for groups that may share an initiative, such as the Technology Employee Champions, a "secret" group for folks interested in testing and promoting new technology, etc. We also use the companion Workplace Chat as our DM application throughout the company. Workplace has allowed us to drastically decrease the amount of internal email sent, to support and create communities of interest, to stay connected as we all work remotely (we have fun on Workplace, too!), and we use Workplace Live to broadcast and record our large-scale meetings, such as our "town hall" meetings. We use Workplace to share tips with one another, share personal life experiences (creating a Workplace post about one's sabbatical experiences is a requirement of our sabbatical program), and many other things.
  • Bring groups of people together to share info, stories, updates, etc.
  • The chat app is pretty decent.
  • Workplace Live is a good large-group meeting broadcast platform.
  • It's pretty intuitive to use for anyone who's used Facebook.
  • It provides different levels of "security" for groups, allowing you to have open, closed, and "secret" groups.
  • It's easy to paste images into your posts and comments, without having to necessarily go through the process of saving an image as a file, etc.
  • It has search capabilities for finding old information.
  • It's available for both desktop/laptop and mobile devices.
  • It's secured to allow only those within the company to see company-related info (but it also has a few inter-company groups, which can be useful, too).
  • Workplace Chat has the ability to set it to Do Not Disturb.
  • You can set notifications, including email notifications, if you want to be alerted to new activity in your groups, etc.
  • You can use Markdown to format your text
  • Workplace Chat is not reliable in terms of being able to delete a comment you sent...sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
  • When viewing a Workplace Live event after it's over, the comments don't always show all of them and in order, even when you choose that option.
  • Your "status" (on vacation, in a meeting, whatever) is a bit too subtle and easy for folks not to notice. We've created "badges" to use in place of our profile photo as a workaround for that, but it would be nice if Workplace had provided something like that itself.
I think Workplace by Facebook is a great communication vehicle for any mid-sized to large company. (Since it's more groups-oriented than "regular" Facebook, it might not work well for smaller companies.) I also don't have any idea what the cost is for having it, but that also be a reason that it wouldn't be worth the expense for smaller companies. For larger companies, I think it's a terrific way for folks to communicate with one another and for "the powers that be" to communicate with employees. Facebook Live is only suitable when you have a limited number of people who need to be on screen and it wouldn't really be suitable as a vehicle for instructor-led online training -- it's really most suitable for presentations (although, via the comments area, does allow for questions to be asked in writing).

Workplace leads the pack

Initially, I buried myself into trial overwhelm as I searched for a client communication and review portal. Each one I tried suffered from one or more of the following:
  • Having almost everything but one specific element being left out.
  • The cost was prohibitive.
  • Time to learn and then deploy and teach was not an efficient use of resources.
  • Segmenting the communication and levels of access not achievable.
After about 5 trials, I was connected to an offer to try Facebook Workplace. It stepped into a perfect role for us and we use it from time to time with clients, depending on the client. I continue to recommend it to clients and a few are now using the platform. We continue to use it as an intraoffice communication tool and it is a great tool for us.
  • It provides a user interface that is familiar and proven to assist in engaging people to use the platform. The layout is clean and minimal and pleasing and that helps staff become comfortable with interacting with one another.
  • Group insights are a fantastic feature that allows you to see how a certain topic, discussion or file is performing with the staff or audience. If you are seeking feedback on a particular memo, for instance, the insights will catalog who has viewed, how many comments, questions or interactions, etc. It helps to see in real-time, the things staff or clients are excited about and then the items where no one comments.
  • Cataloging of historical information is a real benefit. The dashboard has a notes section where I will keep a lot of private and or personal reflections that I can reference at a later time. I may jot a few notes about a project so I can recall them at a later point. Many programs do this, but again, this is all within the same house and for time and memory sake, this really works well.
  • Segmenting is very easy to do. We have set up Groups for various projects, teams, clients or cohorts. You can segment as much as you want and one person may be in more than one group but maybe not all groups. Basic segmenting that works well. Notifications are sent when new posts or news is released.
  • The platform is not the same portal as Facebook so there is no chance that posts get put on the wrong timeline. With this said, what I like most is the ease of onboarding and no one has had any trouble getting up and going on Workplace. It is like Facebook, easy and something most if not all will have familiarity in navigation.
  • It would be helpful if a review confirmation checkbox was able to be placed by files that needed to be read or reviewed. Along the same line, approve, review again, etc. would be helpful checkboxes to add by files, proposals.
  • The layout is clean but suffers a bit from the center column width with two sidebars and a lot of empty space. It almost looks like a going out of business sale retail store where you notice the empty shelves. Workplace feels a bit bare at times. I think some good design modifications can help. Now on mobile, it is a great layout. I am addressing specifically the desktop browser login.
  • An admin control dashboard would be really effective and even more so with more users on the platform.
Workplace is great as a team collaboration and communication tool that is easy to deploy and eliminates friction. I would also recommend it to small agencies who need a client communication portal as it does a great job filling the need. It is also a great tool for associations, community teams, and specialty groups like a club or employee group. As long as guidelines are set and you do not have a predisposition towards paranoia, I would think any group that has a need for communication that needs to be centralized, this can serve you well.

Our company uses Workplace on a daily basis. We use it for communication, both through text and audio calls, between team members. We also use many different groups within Workplace, like an Announcements group where we post important information, or Current Projects to share what we've been working on with the team, and even a Social group to post things from our everyday lives.
  • Team communication.
  • Announcements.
  • Social.
  • It could have a cleaner desktop interface.
  • I've had a lot of audio problems with calls.
  • Sometimes takes a while to refresh if my computer falls asleep.
Workplace is great for keeping up with team members and easily chatting with them throughout the day. Our company focuses a lot on interrelated projects, so there are often many different people working on one project at the same time. Workplace makes it easy to discuss these projects with our team members without having to go through email.

Workplace is being used across the organization in order to collaborate and be aligned on our shared goals. As the central hub of communication of the company, Workplace helps each member be informed and updated about the company´s current initiatives and plans as well as allows groups and teams to organize and communicate to focus the efforts on things that will have an impact.
  • Extremely easy to use as-is modeled on Facebook's platform.
  • Works well in any device (mobile and desktop).
  • Very easy to upload media and share it with the teams.
  • It can be used for distraction rather than focus.
  • Hard to keep track on threads.
  • Notifications system needs to be improved.
Workplace is good for big organizations or remote locations where a central hub of communication is very useful and you can foster a sense of community and closure between different teams that work in different time zones. It is useful for big international companies but may not be best for smaller organizations.

I was an editor for a website that reviews board games, video games, movies, books, etc. The community of writers was very large, and we had previously used Slack to communicate with one another in our departments, but didn't pay for the premium version of Slack, so messages would get deleted. The organization switched to Facebook Workplace as a way to try to keep track of things and communicate via chat.
  • Segmented groups for chat.
  • Different permission levels as far as admins or users.
  • There's little or no way to track tasks or manage items.
  • The personal "wall" feature seems very useless.
It might be well suited for a large team to communicate and collaborate on projects. It's a fine communication tool, but very poor for scheduling, task management, etc. If I'm going to use a "workplace" tool, I'd like for it to function as more than just a glorified chat feature.

Our organization is musical. At first, we communicated through instant messaging applications of cell phones but decided to take a leap towards technology and we were convinced to start using this program. With Facebook Workplace we communicate with all the workers of our company, and the main Directors maintain a communication with their team that is quite good and effective.
  • It speeds up communications between workers, I mean, managing information about the company is much easier now.
  • It has a very competitive and achievable price
  • With this application, time is not lost. The workers use it to communicate with each other about work
  • It is not compatible with your personal Facebook profile
  • You do not have a free trial or a free 30-day version
For example, you need to do teamwork where more than 4 people should meet and contribute ideas for a project. With this tool, you can organize, converse and exchange information about a teamwork project. At that moment this tool becomes quite useful. Also when the president or vice president of the Company wants to share with the workers and give them his message, he can easily do so through this program

If you want to talk about personal things or publish information about something that is outside your workspace, this application is not the most appropriate
